GUELPH, ON -  The Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) makes history this weekend at the 2018 Championship hosted by the University of Ottawa Gee Gees. Hosted at the Carp Fairgrounds, the top eight university teams will convene in a double elimination tournament to be crowned Ontario Champions.

Supported by Alterna Savings, for the first time ever, the tournament will be officiated by full female umpiring crew. Under the leadership of Softball Canada Level V umpire Daryl Way, umpires from across the province will head to the nation’s capital for the Ontario University Championships.

“At Alterna, we place a great deal of importance on women in leadership roles. We exceed board diversity norms and executive ranks with close to 50% of our board and executives being female. As a father of two daughters, I want to see that they have all the same opportunities in life that I have had. For this reason, I am proud that Alterna is sponsoring these historical OIWFA games, and providing an opportunity for women to be represented in roles of authority and influence,” said Rob Paterson, Alterna President and Chief Executive Officer.

The event will begin Friday evening at the annual banquet with a women in leadership panel including Umpire in Chief Daryl Way, OIWFA Secretary Elissa Sivel, Coaching Consultant with the Coaching Association of Canada Jacki Titley, and moderated by alumni of the OIWFA Erin Durant.

OIWFA Secretary, multi-time MVP and alumni of the Gee Gees, and Assistant Coach with UOttawa Elissa Sivel said “Seeing women in positions of leadership is especially important in our league as the teams are comprised of young, ambitious and intelligent women that will make up the leaders of tomorrow."

All games at the OIWFA Championship will be streamed live online through the OIWFA Facebook page at
